  Derrick Johnson’s career in Kansas City hasn’t yet been what he or the Chiefs hoped. But the inside linebacker and former first-round draft pick, buoyed by the news he will start Monday night’s season opener against San Diego at Arrowhead Stadium, is convinced that’s about to change.

• Demorrio Williams rushes into Chiefs defensive plans
  Demorrio Williams had the idea two weeks ago: If the Chiefs were going to use him sometimes as a pass rusher, why not look the part, too? So the veteran inside linebacker approached Kansas City’s coaches and asked them to watch as he lined up with his hand on the ground, similar to a down lineman, and went after the quarterback.
• Johnson, Belcher running with first team at Chiefs practice
  Just got off the field from media access portion (meaning only the first few minutes) of the first regular season practice. Only saw a handful of team snaps but Derrick Johnson and Jovan Belcher were the starting inside linebackers and Casey Wiegmann the first-team center.
• Chiefs put QB Palko on practice squad
  The Chiefs are keeping Tyler Palko close in case they need an emergency quarterback. They signed Palko to the eight-player practice squad they established. The other seven members of the practice squad are also players recently released by the Chiefs. They are: wide receiver Verran Tucker, offensive linemen Darryl Harris and Bobby Greenwood, defensive linemen Garrett Brown and Dion Gales, linebacker Pierre Walters and defensive back Ricky Price. read more

  The Chiefs claimed nose tackle Anthony Toribio off waivers from Green Bay. They will have to make a corresponding roster move to clear roster space for Toribio.

  The Chiefs announced their intentions with regard to Jarrad Page months ago when they drafted Eric Berry and Kendrick Lewis to take his place at safety. The only thing left to be determined was a destination for Page. They found one for him Saturday when they traded him to New England for an undisclosed draft pick.
